Breast Augmentation Surgery

Enlarge and Reshape Your Breasts With Implants

The size and shape of a woman’s breasts dramatically impact her body shape and profoundly affect her self-image.

Unfortunately, not every woman develops an ideal, well-portioned breast contour, and even those that do can lose it after pregnancy, weight fluctuations, and the natural aging process.

Breast augmentation is a popular breast enhancement surgery that uses implants or fat transfer to increase breast fullness, adjust breast shape, balance body proportions, and increase self-confidence, thereby improving a woman’s mental well-being.

Dr. Ali Sadeghi, a double-board certified plastic surgeon, offers breast augmentation surgery for women around New Orleans, Louisiana.

What Is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is the process of using an augmenting material (implants or fat) to make the breasts larger, fuller, and more shapely.

The beauty of breast augmentation (besides the results) is that this plastic surgery procedure is entirely customizable, allowing you to craft the breast contour you have always desired while leaving the padded bras behind.

You have several options to choose from when designing your breast augmentation with implants. These include:

Implant size

  • Implants are measured in CC’s (cubic centimeters) and offered in a wide variety of volumes, allowing you to select your level of enhancement, from subtle to significant

Implant material

  • Saline implants (silicone shell filled with a saline solution)
  • Silicone implants (silicone shell filled with a cohesive silicone gel)

Implant profile

  • The height of the implant versus the base width to determine breast projection

Implant placement

  • Above the pectoral muscle – subfascial breast augmentation
  • Below the pectoral muscle

Incision placement

  • Inframammary (along the breast crease)
  • Periareolar (around the darker pigmented areola)
  • Transaxillary (in the armpit)

Alternatively, you can undergo natural breast augmentation where your breast size is increased using fat from your body.

Dr. Sadeghi will help you understand your body type and desired outcomes to help you achieve your goals.

What Are the Benefits of Breast Augmentation?

If you feel insecure about your breasts, it can affect your self-esteem, ability to be intimate, social interactions, and mental health.

After breast augmentation, you can experience:

Fuller, More Youthful Breasts

Full and firm breasts are a sign of youthful vigor, whereas deflated or saggy breasts often reflect premature aging. Dr. Sadeghi can restore a more supple, attractive, and younger breast contour by augmenting your breasts.

Well-Balanced Body Shape

Natural small breasts can appear out of proportion with your surrounding body contours. Breast augmentation increases the size and shape of the breasts to complement your curves.  You’ll be able to wear clothes and styles that might not have suited your body shape before.

Increased Self-Confidence

Many women report feeling more confident and attractive after receiving breast implants. For many, this increase in self-esteem can affect how they present themselves in all aspects of their lives.

Is Breast Augmentation Right for Me?

You may want to consider breast augmentation if:

  • You have naturally small breasts that hinder your confidence
  • Your breasts have deflated after pregnancy or weight loss
  • You desire a better breast shape
  • Your breasts do not match your body proportions
  • You have noticeable breast asymmetry

Does this sound like you? Contact Dr. Sadeghi today for your one-on-one consultation to determine if you are a candidate for breast augmentation.

How Is a Breast Augmentation Performed?

Breast augmentation is an outpatient procedure that typically takes one to two hours to perform under general anesthesia.

Depending on the techniques being used, an incision will be made under the breast, around the areola, or in the armpit. Through these, a breast pocket is created above or below the chest muscle, and an implant is inserted into that pocket. (Saline implants are filled after implantation; silicone implants are pre-filled). Incisions are then closed.

What Is Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation?

Women desiring a subtle, natural-looking increase can undergo fat transfer breast augmentation (natural breast augmentation).

With this technique, fat is removed from the body using gentle liposuction (to preserve the integrity of the fat). This fat is purified and then injected into various regions of the breasts to increase fullness.

While this technique replicates the look and feel of natural breasts and helps slim body contours, it cannot achieve the same level of breast enhancement as implants.

Therefore, some women choose to combine implants with their fat transfer.

Should I Combine Breast Lift Surgery With My Breast Augmentation?

Women who consider breast augmentation after pregnancy or significant weight loss often experience moderate to significant breast sagging (ptosis). Breast augmentation alone cannot lift sagging breasts. To address this, many women choose to combine their breast augmentation with a breast lift.

Breast lift surgery tightens the natural breast tissue and removes excess breast skin to restore youthful, perky breasts. Additionally, the nipple-areola complex can be raised and repositioned.

Some patients choose to combine their breast enhancement with body contouring procedures, such as:

Other plastic and reconstructive surgery combination techniques may be available depending on your needs and goals for the surgery. Contact the Sadeghi Center for Plastic Surgery for more information.

What Should I Expect After My Breast Augmentation?

How Long Does It Take to Recover From Breast Augmentation?

Pain after breast augmentation is mild, but you should expect some soreness and swelling.

While some women feel back to normal after one week, most take about six weeks to recover completely. Sedentary, desk-type type jobs can be resumed after one week.

After your breast augmentation, your breasts will need extra support, and you should use a support bra at all times in the weeks following your surgery. A support bra provides extra stability and some compression to help reduce swelling and pain.

Dr. Sadeghi wants to make sure you have the most comfortable recovery process possible and will make sure to give you instructions including:

  • How to properly care for your surgery incisions
  • Medications to help with swelling, pain and to prevent infection
  • Warning signs to watch out for any possible complications
  • When to schedule a follow-up appointment

Does Breast Augmentation Leave Scars?

Because breast augmentation involves incisions, scars will be left after surgery. Fortunately, when working with a skilled and experienced plastic surgeons like Dr. Sadeghi, your scars will be placed in discreet locations and should be easy to cover with bras and bathing suits.

Your scars will fade with time naturally; however, you can help encourage this process by using scar fading treatments and not smoking. The chemicals in nicotine can cause incisions to heal slower, thus contributing to scar formation.

Frequently Asked Questions About Breast Augmentation

How painful is it to get breast implants?

Pain is usually mild after breast augmentation. However, you should expect some discomfort and soreness, similar to the pain associated with getting a bruise. Dr. Sadeghi will provide you with proper pain medications and suggestions for making your recovery more comfortable.

Severe pain is not commonly associated with breast enhancement surgery and may indicate a problem. Should you experience significant discomfort, contact Dr. Sadeghi’s staff right away.

Should I choose silicone or saline implants?

Both work wonderfully, although silicone gel implants are the more modern procedure. Some women say silicone gel feels and looks more like natural breast tissue, but some prefer the shape and hang of the saline-filled implants.

Can I breastfeed after breast augmentation

Many patients can breastfeed after breast augmentation, but you should let Dr. Sadeghi know if you plan to breastfeed in the future. Because the surgery does not affect the nipple or the breast ducts, the breasts should maintain their normal function.

Will a breast augmentation or lift make my areola smaller?

Some people choose to make the areola smaller during their breast augmentation, but it isn’t necessary.
