Ear Surgery / Otoplasty

Reduce the Prominence and Noticeability of Overly Large Ears with Ear Surgery Otoplasty In New Orleans

Having overly large ears or ears that stick far off the head can put men, women, and children at risk of enduring hurtful teasing about their ears’ size, shape, or position.

This ridicule can cause them to seek corrective otoplasty (ear surgery).

What Is Otoplasty?

Otoplasty is a simple surgical procedure that repositions the ears closer to the head and can sometimes reduce overly large ears. This procedure is highly customizable; however, most patients choose this treatment to see their ears lie flatter against their heads.

Most otoplasty candidates ears’ protrude more than three millimeters from the scalp.

Who Can Benefit From Ear Surgery?

Ear surgery is unique in that it can be performed on children as well as on adults. Development of the pinna (outer ear cartilage) usually completes by the age of five or six. Therefore, children as young as five or six may be candidates for otoplasty (as long as their ears have developed).

Many parents consider this surgery for their children to help them avoid the hurtful teasing often associated with large and protruding ears.

While this surgery is often performed on children, adults of all ages can also benefit.

How Is Otoplasty Performed?

With adults, otoplasty is usually performed under local anesthesia with a sedative. Children usually do best with general anesthesia, so that they will be completely asleep.

An incision is made behind the ear to ensure that the resulting scar remains hidden. Through this incision, Dr. Sadeghi will reshape the ear cartilage using a combination of strategic sutures, scoring, and tissue removal.

The ear is then repositioned and sutured in place.

Ear surgery usually takes between one and two hours to complete.

Is Otoplasty Dangerous?

Otoplasty is one of the safest cosmetic surgery procedures available and can positively affect self-esteem in both adults and children.

How Long Is Recovery After Ear Surgery?

After otoplasty, you will have a large pressure dressing on your ears to prevent swelling and fluid buildup. Dr. Sadeghi will remove this dressing after two to three days, and you can then wash your hair.

You’ll need to be very careful when washing or styling your hair as your sutures heal over the following two to three weeks.

Bruising and swelling normally disappear within the first week, at which time patients can return to work or school.

How Much Does Ear Surgery Cost in New Orleans, LA

The cost of your otoplasty will depend on the extent of the surgery and whether any other plastic surgery procedures are being performed (for adults only).

Some otoplasty patients choose to combine their ear surgery with facelift surgery, brow lift surgery, or rhinoplasty (nose surgery).

Dr. Sadeghi and his team at the Sadeghi Center for Plastic Surgery will provide you with an accurate cost estimate during your consultation.
